Jomay Cao - Creator of Perelle

Tell us a bit about yourself and what you're passionate about.
My academic background is in occupational and consumer psychology, however, most of my experience is in small business after operating a couple of boutiques retailing my event wear and bridal label. I sold the physical retail business in August of 2016 with a view to building an online clothing retail business instead. I'm passionate about sustainability and conscious commerce, I'm highly interested in fashion tech and health and wellbeing, and I'm obsessed with my dog.

What's idea and what are you working on?
My recent startup is Perelle - a sustainable fashion eCommerce brand and platform where women can explore and customise resort and event apparel, and shop organic perfume products from the eBoutique.

What problems/issues does your product address?
Ecological development - All Perelle apparel is made using fibres derived from bamboo. Bamboo grows prolifically in very small land areas, requires a small amount of water for growth and harvesting, doesn't need chemical pesticides and is completely biodegradable. We also minimise water waste by using only two colour dyes per collection. The perfume products are made using organic, vegan essential oils which have known healing and rejuvenating properties.
Online sizing uncertainty - We're removing the hurdle of online garment sizing uncertainty by allowing customers to easily and quickly customise the measurements of their purchase at point of sale.
Accessibility and speed - The high quality, customisable styles offered from the Perelle store are retailed at accessible, fast-fashion price points. Same day shipping also removes the standard lead time associated with made-to-measure clothing.
Consumer comfort  - Aside from the many environmental benefits of Perelle's textiles, they're also highly breathable, versatile, wearable with high frequency and incredibly comfortable. Bamboo even has antibacterial properties that studies suggest can be transferred to the textile itself.

What do you hope to achieve as a Spacecubed Intensify Scholar?
I'm looking forward to immersing myself in the Spacecubed community and hoping to meet lots of like-minded people.

Tony Halls - Developing a new labour hire company

Tell us a bit about yourself and what you're passionate about?
I’m a WA import, growing up in central NSW from a farming background before heading off to Uni and spending my career working across Australia in the mining services industry. Most of this time was spent selling and running the big Caterpillar trucks and bulldozers. My latest role was the Executive General Manager at WesTrac responsible for the Service and Parts business. A couple of months ago I decided it was time for a change and I’m now working for myself, developing a new business. A big change and well outside my comfort zone, but I’m excited and energised.

As someone who never seems to have enough time in the day, my passions outside of a solid working day are limited to spending as much time as possible with my wife (Simone) and kids (Ella 11 and Lily 9) and cycling. I’m a MAMIL that gets out on the bike most days while trying to get fit for an upcoming cycling holiday to Italy and France.

What's your idea and what are you working on?I’m looking to use my experience in mining, customer relationships and workforce management to start a new labour hire company with a twist. The twist includes building some software, apps and algorithms – not at all in my area of expertise. I’m current talking to mining customers on my scope while engaging people to help with the development work required. The one thing that is eluding me at this stage is coming up with a creative company name that I'm happy with - I’m much more comfortable out with the customers!

What problems/issues does your product address?I’m attempting to create a new and improved labour hire approach that better connecting customers (mining and construction) with labour providers (mechanic, boilermakers, electricians). I’m also looking to include a strong safety focus, improve flexibility and efficiency.

What do you hope to achieve as a Spacecubed Intensify Scholar?I’m hoping that Spacecubed will help give me the focus, networks and motivation to successfully kick off my new venture. This is all new to me and I know where I need help, many of the people at Spacecubed compliment this perfectly. Also, if there is anyone that would like to pick my brain based on my background, I’m always happy to help.
