Running in hundreds of cities around the world, Startup Weekend is a fast-paced event that allows budding entrepreneurs to learn what it takes to build a startup, all in one weekend. With 7,000+ programs held across 150+ countries, and 428,000 total participants, it’s a popular weekend that sparks curiosity and innovation in people from all walks of life. It’s the perfect place to connect with passionate people driven to build something new. There is no better place to meet new friends, colleagues, mentors, cofounders, and even potential investors!
Here in Perth, Spacecubed has hosted Startup Weekend for the last eight years with over 1,000+ participants joining us, and each event getting better as the years go on. This year, we had over 60 participants join us for the weekend, kicking off on Friday evening with pitches and team building. 5 teams were formed, and the hustling began. Teams included Envited, TriageMe, TrustEat, Sensory, Impact and GenLux.
Knowing you’re not alone in building a startup can make all the difference, so having the chance to engage and connect with others over the weekend is a truly valuable experience. And the best part? Participants are able to learn from the best of the best. Over 10 volunteer mentors gave up their weekend to share insights, tips and tricks with all participants along the way.
Amilia Bakhtiar, Project Lead shared her feelings on the weekend. “It was one of the best Startup Weekends yet! We had a variety of businesses pitching, and all participants showed huge amounts of enthusiasm and agility over the weekend. The judging team were very impressed!”
With Jeremy Chetty, StudentEdge Founder and EiR Launchpad for Murdoch University, Matthew Larner, Director at ClickSend and Tim Brewer, Founder at Functionly leading the judging panel, the participants were called to the stage. With each team having the opportunity to pitch for a place in Plus Eight Sprint, the stakes were high!
Following a competitive round of pitching and some tough decisions from the judging panel, we’re pleased to announce the teams with the best pitches were Envited, TriageMe and TrustEat! Keep an eye out for their growth over the next six weeks as they join the Plus Eight Sprint program to take their businesses to the next level.
A big thank you to the program partners at Murdoch University, City of Perth, Skills of the Modern Age, ClickSend for helping the team at Spacecubed bring this event to life for the 16th time in Perth.
And for all the participants, they’ve each taken giant leaps toward creating a business, becoming a founder, and are now connected with the right people and resources to go even further as an entrepreneur. So, until next time!
