Startup Weekend 2018 tackles Social Impact
Startup Weekend is run as a fast-paced, non-competitive hackathon – a full weekend event where participants problem-solve large data-based issues – aimed at teaching people the foundations of building a startup business. Initiated by Andrew Hyde in the US back in 2007 as a barebones hackathon, Startup Weekend has grown exponentially, having now been run in over 150 countries.
Since launching in Perth in 2012, Startup Weekend has held 11 sellout events with participation from over 1,504 entrepreneurs, mentors, observers, and judges. Chances are you might’ve heard of some of the startups that’ve been created at some of Perth’s Startup Weekends – 2015’s winner Simply Wall St went on to raise AUD $2.4 million in funding.
Starting Friday 29 June until Sunday 1 July, Startup Weekend is the perfect place to learn the tricks of the trade in a fun, safe space. Participants from all backgrounds and experiences form teams on the Friday night. Over the weekend, teams are taught lean startup principles to develop, test, validate and prototype an innovative business model. On Sunday night, all teams pitch back their progress and ideas to a panel of community judges.
This time around, we’re giving the event a bit of a twist. Startup Weekend ‘Social Impact’ will focus entirely on problems that affect the community – from building community, to environmental sustainability, and everything in-between. This event coincides with the Social Impact Festival: a series of events in July celebrating initiatives surrounding positive social change in Western Australia.
Those who are searching for a weekend to really get the creative juices flowing need look no further. Along with the fantastic opportunity to meet like-minded people – who may even become your new co-founders – it’s also a great crash course in understanding what it takes to build a business from the ground up. The lessons learned can carry over to any future projects might undertake, with a better focus on what key points need to be addressed, and how to best tackle them.
You’ll be well fed and caffeinated throughout the entire three days of pitching, crunching, validating, prototyping, pivoting and presenting. Whether you're 18 or 88, a painter, actor, software engineer, writer, graphic designer, geek, entrepreneur, photographer, musician, programmer, museum curator, or startup specialist.
Whether you have an idea, or have no idea. Everyone is welcome. Grab your ticket and join a creative, fun weekend.
