Christina Huynh majored in illustration at Western Sydney University. However, her journey as a muralist began during her last year when a unit called ‘Off the Wall’ sparked her love for murals. “I'd painted Bruce Springsteen and Stevie Wonder, it was so much fun,” shared Christina.
After completing her studies, Christina made a point to freelance painting murals in local cafes and live painting events while bouncing in and out of graphic design internships. Christina supported herself by working casually in retail for around six years before taking the leap to pursue her passion of painting murals full time in 2017.
Since then, Christina has built an impressive catalogue of work including various public art projects with local councils such as murals for Parramatta Lanes, as well as working with local schools.
“I recently finished installing four sibling murals sprinkled throughout the Strathfield LGA, and I'm really happy with how they turned out,” added Christina.
Another notable piece of work by Christina is her illustration of the children’s book ‘Grandma’s Treasured Shoes,’ which was written by Coral Vass and published by the National Library of Australia. The picture book tells the story of a grandmother’s journey from Vietnam to Australia as a little girl and to create the illustration Christina used reference pictures of her own grandparents’ lives in Vietnam.
We asked Christina what inspires her creativity and she shared the following.
“I'm inspired by many things: music, travel, goldfish and the concept of emergence, the beauty and fragility of our natural world, moments of consciousness in one's daily life, the heritage of people and places, human nature, childhood memories, and good storytelling. Lots of things, anything and everything that evokes a sense of well-being.”
Christina became a Spacecubed member this year and notes that the Western Sydney Startup Hub has been a great space to help her focus on her work, sharing the below with us.
“It's been beneficial and motivating to have a space separate from home to work within, where I can focus purely on drawings and get into a good mental flow state- which is essential and sometimes difficult to turn on with creative work.”
Christina also enjoys the strong sense of community in the Western Sydney Startup Hub, concluding that “everybody is lovely.”
We love seeing Christina’s vibrant artwork around Western Sydney, captivating the public with her unique style and bringing her creativity to our coworking space.
