Wyatt Roy - Federal Member for Longman (Queensland)
Wyatt has a strong interest in developing Australia’s start-up eco-system. He has travelled to both the Silicon Valley and Israel to investigate the ingredients of their success.
A small, but clearly forward-thinking nation, Israel, especially, has impressed him with the sheer scale of its start-up and innovation landscape. Wyatt is now working determinedly to build firm alliances in technology and research between Israel and Australia.Wyatt made history on August 21, 2010 when at age 20 he was elected the Federal Member for Longman, 60km north of Brisbane, and the youngest-ever Member of Parliament (State or Commonwealth) in Australia.
Since being crowned GQ Magazine’s Politician of the Year in 2010, he has maintained a high media profile.
Wyatt was re-elected at the September 7, 2013 poll, bolstering his former marginal hold on Longman with a five per cent swing. The defeat of Labor after six years in office installed Wyatt as part of a new Coalition government in the 44th Australian Parliament. In November 2013, Wyatt was appointed chair of the Joint Standing Committee on Treaties. This key parliamentary body scrutinises proposed or established agreements underpinning Australia’s obligations to other nations in international law.He is also a member of the Joint Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade.
