Celebrating nine years of supporting changemakers at Spacecubed

The original Spacecubed, located on the Ground Floor of 45 St Georges Terrace in Perth and now known as Riff, was the city’s first collaborative working space. With a community-lead team and an innovative approach to the future and what was yet to come, Riff quickly became a hub for entrepreneurs tackling some of the greatest social and economic challenges of our time.

Just short of four years later, we opened our second coworking space, FLUX, at 191 St Georges Terrace Perth. With 1,400 square meters of space over three floors, FLUX also included premium event space, outdoor coworking and the SOLDER Prototyping lab and maker space.

But supporting startups through coworking wasn’t our only focus. We launched the Plus Eight Accelerator Program in April 2017 in partnership with muru-D, and since then we’ve gone on to support numerous startups, with 2021 being no expectation. Now, with new partners on board including Woodside and RAC’s BetterLabs, we’re taking the program to new levels. Discover more and apply for the program here.

With each stage of the business growing exponentially in the past nine years, the last four have seen the most growth. Some highlights over the past year can be seen in our most recent Annual Report, available for download here.

And even though 2020 accelerated a lot of this growth, we had seen a dramatic increase in the number of coworking spaces, programs and support for entrepreneurs in the years leading up to COVID-19. Outlined in Brodie McCulloch’s latest reflection on LinkedIn is how this growth came through Western Australian clients, corporate sponsorship, and Local, State and Federal Government Funding. This trend can also be seen into the WA regions, with the latest Meshpoints Regional Innovation Report outlining the main ports for funding is through the Private Sector (42.9%), followed by hubs being Commercially Self-Sustaining (28.6%) and a joint 9.5% for Local and State Government.

Here at Spacecubed, we now have seven coworking spaces spanning from Mandurah, through the Perth CBD and into Yanchep, and support five programs that run nationally. Looking back over the last nine years, the growth periods have taught us invaluable lessons, and also allowed us to come back to our roots of where we began. Community is at the heart of everything we do, whether that’s flexible workspaces, programs or technology.
